The Reception of the First Vatican Council (1870 to 2020) from Old Catholic, Anglican and Orthodox perspectives

Research into the contemporary and enduring consequences of the First Vatican Council (1869/70) from a historical, theological and ecumenical perspective is a vital part of the research conducted at the Institute for Old Catholic Theology, both in the areas of church history and Old Catholicism, as well as in systematic and ecumenical theology.

The virtual exhibition was created to mark the 150th anniversary of the First Vatican Council in 2020. It is dedicated to the contemporary and current Old Catholic, Anglican and Orthodox reception of the First Vatican Council. These traditions (like many others) agreed in their rejection of the papal dogmas, already beginning to converge in the nineteenth century. Thus, they made an important contribution to the twentieth-century Ecumenical Movement.

Clarification of terms: ‘Reception’ refers to how the traditions as mentioned above dealt with and reacted to the new papal dogmas and theologically grappled with them between 1870 and today.

The exhibition was elaborated by the Institute of Old-Catholic Theology and financially supported by strategic funds of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Bern. We would be delighted if you made reference to this exhibition. Please quote as follows: :
