The Old Catholic Theology Prize is established by the Institute for Christian Catholic Theology and is awarded for outstanding work in various theological disciplines. The Call for Papers is generally open to students of the Faculty of Theology in Bern (BA, MA and doctoral students). The award is presented at the annual academic graduation ceremony.
In 2024, papers relating to the theological concerns and history of Old Catholicism could be submitted.
The submitted texts were judged on the basis of the call for papers with regard to the focus of the content as well as scientific relevance and innovative quality. The jury decided to award the prize to lic. phil. Martin Bürgin for his contribution «Kulturkampf auf allen Feldern: Josef Leonz Weibel als Verfechter eines liberalen Katholizismus in Religion, Recht und Politik». The jury recognised the contribution's relevance to political and theological history and its extremely nuanced presentation as innovative.
The prize was awarded during the academic graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Theology on 17 October in the Aula of the University of Bern. The article itself will be published in 2025.
